Civil Engineering Knowledge at Your Desk

This demonstrator service shows how the world of civil engineering knowledge can be made available at your desk. It is possible to cross-search a world-wide spectrum of collections of publications relevant to civil engineering without having to visit many individual sites, and to provide direct access to original material where this is openly available. The number of sources in this demonstrator is necessarily limited, but would be greatly expanded in a fully operational version.

The service has been commissioned by the Institution of Civil Engineers as part of a wider research project to review "Electronic document delivery for civil engineers". It is provided by Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, based on the Pilot Engineering Repository Xsearch (PerX) project which is investigating resource discovery issues in engineering digital repositories.

You are invited to explore and use this demonstrator service in your sector of interest - the Help page explains how to get to the full text of available source documents. Then please send your comments on your experience, and suggestions for future development, to Mike Thorn at mfcthorn@supanet.com. These will be used to develop and support the conclusions of both the ICE and the Heriot Watt projects.
